“Pain in the butt”の意味と使い方 Bizmatesビジネス英会話 Tip 239

Pain in the butt ってどういう意味?

Pain in the buttは、直訳すると「お尻の痛み」ですが、これは「うっとうしい存在」のことを指します。

実は、より侮辱的な慣用句(あまり乱用すると品が無いと思われるような表現ですので、ここではあえてご紹介しません)を”かわいく”表現したのが Pain in the butt なのです。

Pain in the butt ってどういう場面で使うの?

いつも正常に動作しないプリンターや、いつも仕事の足を引っ張る社員。激痛というわけではないけれど、持病のように常につきまとう苦痛のようなものや人のことを話す時に使う表現です。

スラングの一種になりますが、かなり頻繁に耳にします。ですが、やはり批判的な表現なので、決して「うっとうしい存在」だと思う人本人に向かって使うことはありません。

Hey, everyone! Welcome to this Bizmates words

and phrases video series and today's

idiom is "a pain in the butt."

Okay, it's not a clean idiom, okay? I must warn you but

you know it's one that's commonly used

in the office and it's helpful to know

what it means -- a pain in the butt -- okay?

You know what a "pain" is, right?

I have a pain in my shoulder,
I have a pain in my stomach.

Your butt is your bum.
Here's your bum...

So you have pain in the bum

but it has a special meaning, okay?
So what

does this mean? We'll find out but first

let's look at what I sometimes hear:

So let's imagine that I'm talking to my

colleague, Taro, and we have a new printer

in the office, okay?

And in this new printer is complicated,

it breaks down. It's... it has so many buttons.

It's difficult to use. So I say:
Taro,

this new printer is so difficult to use.

And Taro says:
Yes, it is troublesome.

OK, this sentence is okay -- it is troublesome --

you know, it has many problems, bothersome,

it's not good... but it just doesn't sound

very natural when you're speaking to a

colleague about some problem.

Okay? So instead of troublesome, Taro can

sound more natural by saying this

So I say:
You know, Taro, this new printer is

so difficult to use.
And Taro says:

Yes, it's a pain in the butt.

Very natural! Pain in the butt.

It's troublesome, it's just it's a pain.

You know, it hurts right here...
it's just...

it's frustrating. It's a pain in the butt.

And we can use this with people too.

You could say he or she is a pain in the

butt -- someone who causes trouble, okay?

And you know "butt" is still... "butt" is still

kind of clean, okay? There are other words

you could use which are not so good but

"butt" is still acceptable.

OK so let's look at pronunciation.

Yes, it'sa paininthe butt.

Yes, it's a pain in the butt.
You try.

Good. OK with my sentence:

This new printer is so difficult to use.

Right. It is a pain in the butt.

Perfect. OK so for homework, I want you to

tell me someone who is a pain in the

butt. Okay? Maybe someone at work,

someone at home, one of, you know...
someone in

the family, I don't know. Okay? Someone who

causes trouble -- stress -- to you.

OK so someone who is a pain in the

butt. Think about it and we will see you

next time. Thank you.
