Hello everyone, Justin here and welcome
back to another Bizmates for Beginners

0:00:05.220,0:00:10.050
video lesson where every week we
introduce a new idiom, phrase, or

0:00:10.050,0:00:15.480
expression to help you with your daily
business conversation. And this week

0:00:15.480,0:00:22.439
everyone we are going to learn the
expression: "to put one's foot down."

0:00:22.439,0:00:26.279
OK so it's a good one, if you're curious and
you want to know what it means and how

0:00:26.279,0:00:29.929
to use it,
alright stay tuned but first as always,

0:00:29.929,0:00:33.960
let's do a quick review of last week's
class.

0:00:33.960,0:00:39.960
Alright so imagine I asked you:
Do you ever talk to the guy in the corner?

0:00:39.960,0:00:45.960
Alright he's always sitting by himself
and you think that he's kind of unique

0:00:45.960,0:00:52.530
or kind of maybe a little bit strange. So
what do you say using the expression

0:00:52.530,0:00:57.629
from last week to describe that person?
I'll give you five seconds to think

0:00:57.629,0:01:00.920
about it okay? You ready?
Alright go!

0:01:04.900,0:01:07.440
Okay and time is up.
If you said

0:01:07.480,0:01:12.500
"Well, never. He's the black sheep of
the group" then that's exactly right.

0:01:12.510,0:01:17.310
Well done and thanks for remembering
last week's class. Okay so let's move on

0:01:17.310,0:01:24.450
to: "put one's foot down." Now this is what
I sometimes hear -- alright so I'm speaking

0:01:24.450,0:01:30.659
to Taro, my good colleague, and I say:
Taro, you know sometimes my staff, they don't

0:01:30.659,0:01:37.740
listen to me. So what should I do?
Okay Taro says: Well, you're the boss, right?

0:01:37.740,0:01:43.439
So you have to be strict. Yes, so you're
the leader, you're the person in

0:01:43.439,0:01:48.990
authority, so you have to be strict -- tell
them what to do, okay use your power.

0:01:48.990,0:01:53.790
Now, although this is fine, we might use a
different expression and you might hear

0:01:53.790,0:01:59.670
a native English speaker say something
like this: Okay, so you are the boss. So

0:01:59.670,0:02:07.890
you have to put your foot down. So what
this means is you use your position of

0:02:07.890,0:02:13.770
authority, okay -- your power, to make sure
people do something or to make sure

0:02:13.770,0:02:18.690
well don't do something okay? So if
you're the boss or if you're a parent,

0:02:18.690,0:02:24.240
for example, or if you're like the team
captain or team leader, you use your

0:02:24.240,0:02:30.540
power and you use your authority, in that position, to make sure

0:02:30.540,0:02:37.050
people do what you want them to do, or
what you don't want them to do. So you

0:02:37.050,0:02:42.450
put your foot down okay? You have a
strong position, you said "no, this is what

0:02:42.450,0:02:47.700
you're going to do because I'm the boss"
alright? So you use your position as a

0:02:47.700,0:02:54.090
source of power and authority, okay?
All right, so yeah maybe I'm a little bit too

0:02:54.090,0:02:59.940
kind you know, I don't really want people
to, you know, dislike me but you know

0:02:59.940,0:03:04.500
sometimes if you're the boss, you have to
put your foot down and tell people what

0:03:04.500,0:03:09.270
you want them to do or don't want them
to do because, well I'm the person in

0:03:09.270,0:03:15.810
power, right now okay? Put your foot down.
All right so pronunciation, it's as you

0:03:15.810,0:03:20.940
see it here, but when a native English
speaker says this very quickly, they may

0:03:20.940,0:03:28.300
drop the "T" here and here okay?
So instead of put your foot down,

0:03:28.320,0:03:32.660
it's pu' your foo' down, okay?
So there might not be a very strong

0:03:32.670,0:03:38.940
"T" sound here and here. Okay so please
repeat after me: put your foot down.

0:03:38.940,0:03:39.620
Your turn.

0:03:41.620,0:03:44.100
Good all right now after my question here:

0:03:44.200,0:03:49.040
You know sometimes my staff don't
listen to me. What should I do?

0:03:51.460,0:03:55.120
Yeah that's right. You're the boss, so you
have to put your foot down.

0:03:55.180,0:04:00.740
Right. Use your power. Okay, all right so remember
that for next time. Our bonus question

0:04:00.750,0:04:05.100
this week is another way to say:
"troublesome." If you know what the answer

0:04:05.100,0:04:09.060
is, you can leave it in the comments
below. If you don't know what the answer

0:04:09.060,0:04:13.709
is, well you can find it in one of our
previous Bizmates for Beginners video

0:04:13.709,0:04:18.959
lessons so take a look if you are
interested. Alright everyone so that is

0:04:18.959,0:04:22.710
it for me this week, thank you so much
for watching. As always have a great

0:04:22.710,0:04:25.790
weekend, see you next time.
