Bizmates初級ビジネス英会話 Point 164 ”energetic”

初級者向けビジネス英会話 Bizmates for beginners 第164弾は、”energetic” です。

ジャスティンの会社に新しく入ったスタッフ。
元気いっぱい、やる気満々と評判です。

“Did you meet the new staff member?”
「新しいスタッフに会った?」

とジャスティンは同僚タロウに話し掛けました。

「うん。彼女、ものすごくテンションが高いよね。」

と言いたい場合、あなたがタロウなら英語で何と言いますか?

“Yes, she’s really high tension!”

「テンションが高い」「テンションが低い」という表現は、
日本語では日常的に使われますが、
実は英語で”tension”は、日本語と同じ意味では使われないんです。

そこで

“Yes! She’s really energetic!”

と言ってみましょう。
精力的な、活気に満ちた、エネルギッシュな、という意味になります。

Hello, everyone and welcome to this week's Bizmates for beginners video lesson.

Now this week's expression is

energetic.

So what does this mean and how do we use it?

We'll find out in just a moment but not before

we do a quick review of last week's expression.

OK, everyone, imagine

I say: I'm so confused. I don't know what I should do!

What's your advice?
You have five seconds, OK? Go!

And time's up if you said

go with your gut,

then you got it, everyone. Nice job and

thank you for remembering last week's class.

Alright, so moving on to this week's expression

"energetic,"

this is what I sometimes hear:

OK, I'm talking to my colleague, Taro,

and I say:Did you meet the new staff member?

and Taro says:Yes, she's really high tension!

OK, thank you, Taro.

Now this expression, "high tension," is something

that I've heard used many times here in Japan but

to be honest, for a native English speaker

this is a little bit difficult to understand.

The word "tension"

actually has kind of a negative meaning.

So let me give you an example. Imagine in your office,

your colleagues your two co-workers they start fighting, OK?

How do you feel? Maybe the atmosphere in the office kind of changes and

everyone starts to feel a little bit uncomfortable, or

a little bit stressed out, OK?

So in that situation,
there's a lot of tension in the office, okay?

Or the office environment has a lot of tension.

It's really "tense," OK?
So, what should Taro say?

That's right. Instead, Taro should say:

Yes! She's really energetic!

Okay?

Which means she has lots of energy.

She's a really bright and really lively person.

She's energetic -- not, "high tension," okay?

Now, pronunciation is very simple
but one small thing,

please be careful with this part here...

Sometimes I hear people say

ener-GISH or ener-GETIC, or something,

but remember this is a J sound, so it's ener-JETIC, okay, everyone?

Please repeat after me

Energetic (ener-JETIC)

Very good. OK, after my sentence:

Did you meet the new staff member?

Very good. Yes! She's really energetic!
OK, everyone?

Good. So are you an energetic person?

Do you know many energetic people?

Alright, try to use this in your daily conversation.

OK, this week's bonus question is:

Another way to say
too much.

If you know the answer or if you have time to go back

into some previous Bizmates for beginners video lessons,

check it out and leave us the answer
in the comments below, OK?

Alright, everyone, so that is it for me this week.

Thank you so much for watching as always

have a great weekend and
we'll see you next week. Thank you.
