Point 165 ”knocked it out of the park”

初級者向けビジネス英会話 Bizmates for beginners 第165弾は、”knocked it out of the park” です。

“Was my presentation okay?”

“Yes! Good job!”

“Yes! You really knocked it out of the park!”

※”knocked it out of the park”:
野球から来た言葉で、「場外ホームランを打つ」つまり「大成功をおさめる」という意味で使われます。

Hello, everyone. Justin here and welcome

back to another Bizmates for beginners video lesson.

Hopefully all of you are having a great week.

Thanks for watching.

So this week we are going to cover the expression

knocked it out of the park.

So what does this mean and how do we use it?

Well, let's find out but not before we

do a quick review of last week's expression.

OK, everybody. So, imagine I ask:

Did you meet the new staff member?

What do you say?
You have five seconds, okay? Go!

And time's up. If you said

Yes. She's really energetic!

then you got it, everyone.

Nice job. Thanks for studying.

OK, so this week's expression

knocked it out of the park.

It's a bit of a long expression but it's

a really good one, so let's take a look.

OK, this is what I sometimes hear:

I just finished delivering a presentation

and I'm asking my colleague Taro for feedback.

So I say:

Was my presentation okay?

And Taro, he's very supportive, he says:

Yes! Good job!

OK, thank you, Taro.

Now, "good job," this is an excellent expression.

There's nothing wrong with it and we use

this expression all the time in English.

I'm sure you've used it before.

But if you want to say something a little bit

different, if you want a little variety

then I suggest saying:

Yes! You really knocked it out of the park!

It was a home run.

So you did "a really great job."

So this expression references baseball, okay?

So you hit the ball you hit a home

run and you "knock it out of the park."

Alright, so about pronunciation and rhythm.

It's actually very simple, nothing special
but one small point.

Knocked it out of the park, okay?

Out of becomes "outta," okay?

Outta. So we'll push those two words together

So it becomes
knocked it outta the park.

OK, everyone? Alright, please repeat after me.

One more time

knocked it out of the park.
Your turn...

Alright, great! OK, now after my question here:

Was my presentation okay?

Okay, very natural, everyone.
Nice job, thank you.

Alright so please remember

this expression and I'll ask you next

week to see if you studied, okay?

Alright, so this week's bonus question is:

Another way to say
I'm ready.
