Justin: What do you think about the newest member of the team?
You: He’s really gung-ho!

Justin: 最近入ったあの方についてどう思いますか?
You: やる気に満ち溢れていますね!

Hello everyone and welcome to another
Bizmates for Beginners video lesson

0:00:05.339,0:00:10.019
where every week, we introduce an
interesting expression phrase or idiom

0:00:10.019,0:00:14.910
that you can use in your daily
conversation. And this week everyone, we

0:00:14.910,0:00:21.029
are going to learn the expression: "gung
ho." Now I think it's something maybe you

0:00:21.029,0:00:26.250
haven't heard before, so we'll jump into
the details a little later on, but first

0:00:26.250,0:00:29.939
everyone, let's do a quick review of last
week's class.

0:00:29.939,0:00:36.210
Alright so imagine I say: Guess what,
you know, the boss just asked if I want

0:00:36.210,0:00:41.940
to transfer overseas. What should I do?
Well of course, it's a very big, very

0:00:41.940,0:00:47.370
important decision, so you think I should
maybe take my time and maybe give a

0:00:47.370,0:00:52.140
response tomorrow after I've thought
about it. OK so how do you say that

0:00:52.140,0:00:56.820
using the expression we learned from
last week? I'll give you five seconds okay?

0:00:56.820,0:00:58.940
You ready? Alright go.

0:01:02.480,0:01:09.080
And time is up. If you
said "that's a big decision, so you should

0:01:09.080,0:01:13.860
sleep on it" then that's exactly right.
Good job and thank you for remembering

0:01:13.860,0:01:19.920
last week's expression. Alright everyone,
so let's move on to "gung ho."Now this is

0:01:19.920,0:01:24.420
what I sometimes hear...
Alright so recently we had a few new

0:01:24.420,0:01:28.979
members join our company and join the
team, so I say: Hey Taro, what do you think

0:01:28.979,0:01:35.159
about the newest member of the team?
And Taro says: Well he's really energish!

0:01:35.159,0:01:39.420
OK, bonus question for those of you who've
been watching the channel for some time,

0:01:39.420,0:01:45.149
you know that "energish" isn't quite
right. Instead we should use... that's right

0:01:45.149,0:01:49.979
energetic but a different way of saying that is...

0:01:49.979,0:01:55.290
yeah that's right, he's really gung-ho. OK so
whenever someone's really energetic, has

0:01:55.290,0:01:59.280
a lot of energy, is really ambitious and
excited to do things, they're very

0:01:59.280,0:02:05.009
gung-ho. OK now you might say, Justin this
doesn't really sound like an English

0:02:05.009,0:02:11.160
word or English expression. And you would
be right, this actually is taken from a

0:02:11.160,0:02:15.840
Chinese expression, okay?
The very interesting thing about the

0:02:15.840,0:02:21.209
English language is that it often
borrows and takes words and expressions

0:02:21.209,0:02:26.250
from different countries and languages --
countries like Canada and America and

0:02:26.250,0:02:30.810
Australia or the UK, they are very
international places, so it's only

0:02:30.810,0:02:35.519
natural for them to, you know, take some
phrases or expressions and then

0:02:35.519,0:02:41.250
implement it into daily conversation
right? So for example, you might have

0:02:41.250,0:02:46.110
heard someone say "bon voyage" or "bon
appetit" right? And even though they're a

0:02:46.110,0:02:51.480
native English speaker, they will use
that French expression to wish

0:02:51.480,0:02:55.950
someone a good journey, or before they
enjoy a delicious meal you might say "bon

0:02:55.950,0:03:02.819
appetit" right? Or you might hear someone
say "gesundheit" when someone sneezes all

0:03:02.819,0:03:08.400
right, and actually that's German to
wish someone good health. So English is

0:03:08.400,0:03:12.510
interesting in that regard, it takes and
it uses expressions from different

0:03:12.510,0:03:16.500
languages, and native speakers use them
all the time, all right? So that's

0:03:16.500,0:03:20.040
something to keep in mind.
Alright everyone pronunciation: "gung ho"

0:03:20.040,0:03:24.269
it's as you see it written here, so
please repeat after me okay: he's really

0:03:24.269,0:03:25.980
gung ho. Your turn.

0:03:27.300,0:03:32.740
OK now after my question: What do you think
about the newest member of the team?

0:03:34.940,0:03:39.280
OK that's right, so please remember this for next time, alright?

0:03:40.280,0:03:44.100
OK so our bonus
question this week everyone is another

0:03:44.100,0:03:49.019
way to say: "improve." If you know what the
answer is, please leave it in the

0:03:49.019,0:03:53.489
comments below, but if you don't know
what the answer, is and you're interested

0:03:53.489,0:03:58.020
in finding out, you can of course find it
in one of our previous videos.

0:03:58.220,0:04:03.359
OK everyone, so that is it for me this week.
Thank you so much for watching, have a

0:04:03.359,0:04:07.489
great weekend everyone and I'll see you
next time.
