Hello everyone Justin here and welcome
back to another Bizmates for Beginners
video lesson where every week we
introduced a new idiom, phrase, or
expression that you can use in your
daily business conversation. This week
everyone, we are going to learn:
(To Be) Sharp.
Alright, so stay tuned to find out what
this means. But first, let's do a quick
review of last week's lesson. Alright
everyone, okay imagine you want to inform
me or let me know, kind of casually, that
we will not have our staff meeting this
week. Alright, so what phrase or
expression can you use to make that kind
of casual announcement? I'll give you
five seconds to think about it.
Are you ready? Okay go!
Alright and time is up. If you said: FYI which stands for, for your information, we will not have our staff
meeting this week. Then that's exactly
right. Well done and thank you for
remembering last week's class. Okay, but
one let's move on to: (To Be) Sharp. Now
this is what I sometimes hear. Alright so
I'm talking to my good friend and
colleague Taro. And I say: Taro, did you
meet the new sales director? Taro says:
Yes! He is very smart.
Okay very intelligent. Alright, this is
fine, you might also hear a native
English speaker say this however. Yes! he
is very sharp. Alright? So he knows a
lot of things. He's very quick, he's fast
he's intelligent, he's very sharp. Alright?
Now there are actually a few different
ways to use sharp. It can mean a few
different things. For example, okay so
bonus for this week if someone says hey
Taro looking sharp.
It means you're looking good, you're
looking very well dressed. Maybe he has a
very nice suit, maybe he has an important
client meeting. So you know maybe he got
a haircut, he just dressed very nicely. So
we say: Hey Taro, looking sharp. Alright
but if you say someone,
he's very sharp, it could also mean you
know he or she is very smart or very
intelligent. Okay, one more, one more if
you say: Stay sharp.
It kind of means, please be aware of your
surroundings. Make sure you know what's
happening. So for example, if you go to
let's say a dangerous area,
you have to stay sharp. Meaning you have
to be very careful and aware know what's
happening around you. You have to stay
sharp. Okay, so there are a few meanings
but today the main focus is: Yes, the
Sales Director is very sharp. He or she
is very very smart okay? In this case.
Alright, so pronunciation everyone. So
please repeat after me. He's very sharp.
Sharp. Okay your turn.
Alright good. Make
sure you get that nice "R" sound in there.
Sharp. Okay. Alright so after my question.
So did you meet the new Sales Director?
Yes! He's very sharp.
Okay he's sharp, he looks sharp, meaning
is very dressed, he's dressed, very
smartly. Okay, dressed very nicely and of
course he's very intelligent. So there
are a few meanings for sharp. Alright so
keep that in mind. Okay everyone so our
bonus question this week is another way
to say: Hey, are you ok? Why the sad
expression? Ok, I'll give you a hint.
ok maybe that's a little
bit difficult to understand. Alright but
it's alright, I think if you know the
expression. You'll know what I mean.
Alright but if you want to know a better
way of saying this,
please check one of our previous
Bizmates for Beginners video lessons.
Because we did cover this before alright.
Okay, so that is it for us this week
everyone. Thank you always for watching
the channel! Have a great week everyone
and we will see you next time. Goodbye!
