相手から何かお誘いをされた際に、失礼のないようにお断りしたい場面ってありますよね。
例えば、同僚から
“Do you want to go for a beer after work?” 「仕事終わったらビール飲みに行かない？」
と言われた際に、「今日は行けないんだよね。」と伝えたい場合
あなたならどう言いますか？
日本人はこうした場面でよく、
“No thank you.”
といいます。
“thank you”と伝えているため、失礼のない表現だと思うかもしれませんが、
相手がネイティブの場合は「私はあなたと一緒に行きたくないです。」
といったニュアンスで伝わってしまっているのです。
こんなときには、
“I’d love to, but I can’t.”
と答えるようにしましょう。
