00:00
Hello everyone! Justin here and welcome to another Bizmates for Beginners video
00:05
lesson where every week we introduced a new idiom, phrase, or expression that you
00:10
can use in your daily business conversation. This week everyone we are
00:15
going to learn: Pay Top Dollar. So to find out what this means please stay tuned.
00:21
But first as always, let's start with a quick review of last week's lesson.
00:25
Alright everyone, so imagine I asked you: How was your business trip to New York?
00:31
So you just flew back from New York a couple of days ago, but you haven't
00:37
adjusted to the time here in Japan just yet. Okay, so maybe your internal clock
00:44
hasn't quite adjusted from the time difference. So how do you say that using
00:50
the expression from last week? I'll give you five seconds to think about it. You
00:53
ready? Okay go!
00:59
Alright and time is up. If you said: It was good but I still have
01:05
jet lag. Then that's exactly right. Well done and thank you for remembering last
01:10
week's class. Okay everyone, let's move on to: Pay Top Dollar. Now this is what I
01:16
sometimes hear. Alright, so I'm speaking to my good friend and colleague Taro and
01:22
we just watched an online press release, okay, from a tech company. And they just
01:29
launched or just released a new smart watch. But that smart watch although
01:35
it's really great, it's very expensive. So I say: Taro, who would pay over a thousand
01:43
dollars for a smart watch? Taro says: Well, techies will pay much money for the
01:51
newest gadgets. Okay, thank you. Alright Taro, so it's very interesting
01:56
that he used the word techies. Now this is something we covered in one of our
02:00
previous lessons. So a techie is someone that's really really into technology,
02:06
they love technology. Okay? Similarly a foodie is someone who's really into
02:13
food. Okay, so Taro says techies people who love technology will pay much money.
02:19
Now, although this is good, you might hear a native English speaker
02:22
use this expression instead: Techies will pay top dollar for the newest gadgets.
02:30
Okay, so they're willing to spend a lot of money to get the newest toys and
02:35
newest gadgets. Thousand dollars, two thousand dollars doesn't matter. Techies
02:39
will pay top dollar just like foodies. Okay, they will pay top
02:44
dollar for the best cheese, for the best whiner, for the best meat. Companies will
02:49
pay top dollar to attract talent. Okay? So talented workers or employees.
02:56
Alright, so top dollar means you're willing to pay a lot of money. So techies will
03:01
pay top dollar for the newest gadgets. Alright, so pronunciation it's as you
03:06
see here. So please repeat after me: Techies will pay top dollar for the
03:11
newest gadgets. Your turn.
03:16
Alright good, now after my question: Wow, who would pay
03:19
over a thousand dollars for a smart watch?!
03:25
That's right, techies will pay top dollar for the newest smart watch, absolutely.
03:31
Okay everyone, so please remember this for next time.
03:34
Okay, our bonus question this week is another way to say to: act too quickly. To
03:40
do something before you are fully prepared. Alright, if you know what the
03:45
answer is to this, please leave it in the comments below. If you don't know what it
03:48
is, well you are in luck. Because it's something that we covered in one of our
03:52
previous video lessons. So take a look if you have the time. And of course, I will
03:56
leave the answer to last week's bonus question in the information section
04:01
below. Okay everyone, so that is it for us this week. Thank you always for watching!
04:06
Have a great weekend everyone and I'll look forward to seeing you next time.
04:09
Thank you!
