Point 74 ”on the dot”

初級者向けビジネス英会話 Bizmates for beginners 第74弾は、”on the dot” です。

“What time will the meeting start?”「

“We will start just 3pm.”「わたしたちは、3時にスタートします。」

“We will start at 3pm on the dot.”「3

Hello welcome to this Bizmates for
beginners

video series. And today's idiom

is on the dot.

What does this mean? We will find out.

But let's do our test. So

let's imagine I am inviting you

to go drinking. So I say let's go
drinking tonight.

But you have no money now.

What do you say? Not I have no money
because it sounds like you are poor.

So you say. That's right. I'm short on
cash.

Sorry I'm short on cash. I hope you got
that.

OK let's go to today's idiom.

On the dot. OK so this is what

I usually hear. So imagine Taro

and I our colleagues. And I say Taro

what time will the meeting start? What
time?

And he says we will start

at just 3 p.m. Just

3 p.m. Hmmm.

It's a little bit strange. He wants to say
exactly

at 3 p.m. but in English we usually
don't use it

like this. Just at 3 p.m. OK.

Exactly 3 p.m. is OK. But a more natural
way

to say this is like this. So what time
will the meeting start?

And he says well we'll start at 3 p.m.

on the dot. Very natural.

On the dot. Exactly

at 3 p.m. OK, so let's look at
pronunciation.

Its we'll start at we'll start at

3 p.m. on the dot. We'll start at 3 p.m.
on the dot.

You try.

Good. One more time with my sentence
or my question.

What time will the meeting start. Perfect.

OK so for homework. Next time I will
ask you

what time will the meeting start. And you say

not just 3 p.m. We'll start at 3 p.m.

on the dot. Please remember this and we
will see you next time.

Thank you.
