Tip 106 ”It’s been ages.” 無料ビジネス英語学習

無料ビジネス英語学習 Words & Phrases 第106弾は、”It’s been ages.” です。

しばらく連絡を取り合っていない知り合いに、突然どこかで再会!なんてことありますよね。
今回はそんな時に使えるフレーズです。

例えば、タロウが久しぶりにヒカに偶然道端で再会し声をかけられました。
あなたがタロウなら何と返しますか?

“Taro, long time no see.”「タロウ、久しぶり。」とヒカが声をかけてきました。

返答に
“Oh, long time no see.”「おぉ、久しぶり。」
と全く同じフレーズを使っても間違いではありませんが、他の表現で話を続けてみるのはいかがでしょう。

そこで
“It’s been ages. How’ve you been?”「久しぶり。元気にしてた?」
と言ってみましょう。より自然に聞こえます。

“How are you?”は普段からコンタクトをとっている人に対して使います。
ここでは前回会ってから時間が経過していますので”How’ve you been?”を使ってみましょう。

話し方は、”It’s been ages.”の後に少し間をあけてから話を続けましょう。
ぜひこの表現を使ってみてください。ビデオでの発音チェックもお忘れなく!

Hello and welcome to this Bizmates words and phrases video series for Japanese business people.
And today's phrase is it's been ages.

OK, you know what age is, right?
My age is 24. About 13 years ago.
OK, but what does this mean?
It's been ages.
We'll find out today.

But first, let's do our test.
OK, so I'm going to ask you what did you want to ask me?
Do you remember?

You have kind of a sensitive request.
OK, what do you say?

What did you want to ask me?
And you say?

That's right.
Were you able to get that?

I wouldn't normally ask you this.
This is special case, but may I have… OK.
I hope so. All right, now.

Today's phrase is it's been ages.
What does this mean?
This is a great one because you will have many chances to use this.

OK, let's look at what I usually hear.
So let's imagine, Taro and I, we have seen each other for a long time.
Maybe he quit the company and then I see him in the street.
You know, it's been 5 years.
We haven't seen each other.

And I say, Taro, long time no see.
And he says, Ah long time no see.
How are you?

OK, nothing's wrong with this because everyone knows long time no see.
But if one person says long time no see, maybe the other person shouldn't say the exact same thing.
Maybe you can say something a little bit different, right?
Not just long time no see.

So, in that case, you can say this.
Taro, long time no see.
It's been ages. How've you been?
Much more natural.

Instead of just repeating, long time no see, we have a new phrase.
It's been ages.
It's been a long time since I last saw you.
That is it's been ages.

And don't say how are you?
OK, How are you is when we meet people all the time.
We can say how are you.

But if you haven't seen them for a long time, we say how have you been?
How've you been?

OK, let's look at pronunciation.
It's been ages. How've ya been?
You see that?
It’s it's been ages with a pause.
How've ya been?
It's been ages.
How've ya been?

You try. OK, let's try it with my sentence.
Oh, long time no see. I've been great.
What about you?
Perfect. Just like that.

OK, so, for homework.
Next time I see you, let's imagine that it's been a long time.
And I'm going to say, long time no see.
And you say, it's been ages.
How've you been?
OK, just like that.

OK, we'll see you in the next lesson.
Thank you.
