Hello and welcome to this Bizmates words and phrases video series

and today's idiom is

hit the books

This doesn't mean to
literally hit a bunch of books.

OK, I will explain this in just a minute
but first let's do our test.

OK, remember the last time
I am taking my promotion test

to become a manager or senior manager
and I say:

I have my promotion test this afternoon. I'm so excited. I'm nervous.

And you want to give me some
encouragement

but not the usual "do your best."
You can say...

There you go.

Show them what you're made of.

OK, I hope you got that.
Let's go on to today's idiom

hit the books

Another great idiom that we sometimes hear.

But here's what I sometimes hear.

So let's imagine I want to invite Taro
to do something this weekend.

OK so I say:
Taro, what are you doing this weekend?

Do you have any plans?
and Taro says:

I'm going to study.
I need to prepare for my test.

Perfect.
Perfect two sentences

but you know this word "study"

What's another way to say "study"?

Because if you think about it,
there aren't that many ways to say "study"

You know, I'm going to educate my brain.

Or I'm gonna educate myself; or
I'm going to exercise my neurons

or I'm going to...

not study... it's hard!
It's hard to think of other ways to say "study".

So, to give you another option instead of saying "study"
you could say this

So I say:
Taro, what are you doing this weekend?

Let's go out.
And he says:

I'm gonna hit the books.
I need to prepare for my test.

OK, very natural, Taro.
I'm going to hit the books

It means "study"
And you can imagine kind of

reading, reading, reading...
looking at many books

Hit the books.
OK? So let's look at pronunciation.

So it's I'm gonna...
I'm gonna...

not hiT the books, but
I'm gonna hi' the books.

I'm gonna hi' the books.
You say it really fast

so the "T" is silent.
I'm gonna hi' the books.

In the second sentence:
I need to prepare for my test.

So it's not
I need TO prepare for my test, but

I need ta prepare for my test.

I'm gonna hi' the books.
I need ta prepare for my test.

You try...

OK, good.
With my question:

So, what are you gonna do this weekend?

Perfect!
OK so for homework next time I'm going to say:

What are you going to do this weekend?
And you say...

not "I'm going to study"
but...

I'm going to hit the books.
I need to prepare for my test.

OK, please remember this
and we will see you next time

Thank you.
