Tip 63 ”I heard it through the grapevine.” 無料ビジネス英語学習

無料ビジネス英語学習 Words & Phrases 第63弾は、”I heard it through the grapevine.” です。

ビジネスをしていると色々な情報を人づてに聞きますよね。
今回はそんな状況を伝える際に使えるフレーズです。

例えば、ある情報を同僚に伝えたところ
“Who did you hear that from?” 「それは誰から聞いたの?」
と聞かれたため、「人づてに聞いたんだよ。」と伝えたい場合に
あなたらならどういう言い方をしますか?

日本人は「噂話」=”rumor” で覚えている人が多いため、

“I heard it from rumor.”
が思い浮かんだ人は多いと思います。

もちろんこれでも意味は伝わるのですが、
ビジネスのシチュエーションにおいては、たくさんの人が色々な話をしているため
そうした情報ネットワーク自体を連想させる”grapevine”は、
噂話そのものを表す”rumor”よりも適切な表現として使えるわけです。

ですので、こうしたシチュエーションにおいては、

“I heard it through the grapevine.”
と言うと、とてもナチュラルな表現になります。

Hello and welcome to this Bizmates words and phrases
video series for Japanese businesspeople.

And today's phrase is a little bit long but a very useful one.
I heard it through the grapevine.

You know grapes, they grow on vines.
I heard it through the grapevine.

What does this mean?
OK, well we'll find out.

OK, but first let's do our usual test.
When were you lost for words?

You were in shock. You didn't know what to say.
You tell me that situation, what happened?

OK, I hope you came up with a good answer.
OK, so let's go on to today's phrase.

I heard it through the grapevine.
What does it mean? OK.

Well, here's what I often hear.
So let's say Taro tells me something.

He says, oh Hika, I heard this.
And I say, what? Taro, who did you hear that from?

Who told you? How did you find out?
And Taro says, I heard it from rumor.

OK, you heard it, OK yes it's a rumor.
You heard it from a rumor... OK, OK.

It's kind of a... and I can understand this
because rumor is rumor. You know, someone told him,

but it's really unnatural, I heard it from rumor.
It's just, it makes sense but just doesn't sound natural.

So we need a better natural sounding phrase for this situation.
And it's this one.

If I say, who did you hear that from, who told you, Taro?
You could say, I heard it through the grapevine.

It's the same meaning, it means you know in rumor,
there is gossip and he heard it. Yeah.

I heard it through the grapevine.
Natural phrase we use it a lot

because in an office it where we have a group of people,
people like to talk about many things, right?

They gossip, you know they tell rumors.
That's the grapevine. They call it the grapevine.

So you could say, I heard it through the grapevine.
OK, so let's remember that phrase.

But let's practice pronunciation. I heardit,
I heardit through the grapevine. You try.

OK, with my question.
So who did you hear that from?

OK, so I heard it through the grapevine.
Let's remember that.

For homework, now we have some rumors.
OK, what did you hear through the grapevine?

OK, tell me one rumor that you heard.
What did you hear through the grapevine?

Tell me in the next lesson, thank you.
