“Survey”の意味と使い方 Bizmates初級ビジネス英会話 Point 249

Survey ってどういう意味?

Survey は日本語で言う「アンケート調査」のことです。「アンケート」は「調査をする」という意味のフランス語 “enquête” が語源になっているので、英語では使われません。

「アンケート調査を実施する」と言いたい時は “conduct a survey” などと表現します。

ちなみに、「アンケート」はよく”questionnaire”と和訳されますが、これは「アンケート用紙」もしくは「設問集」といった物理的なモノを指す言葉であり、「調査」という活動を表すものではありません。

Survey ってどういう場面で使うの?

たとえば、マーケティング部所属の社員同士の会話の中で:

Justin: What do the customers think about our new product?
You: I’ll send a survey.

Justin: お客様は新商品についてどう思っているのでしょう?
You: アンケートを行ってみます。

Hello everyone and welcome to another
Bizmates for Beginners video lesson

0:00:06.629,0:00:11.790
where every week, we introduce a new
idiom, phrase, or expression that you can

0:00:11.790,0:00:16.590
use in your daily business conversation.
And this week everyone, I'd like to go

0:00:16.590,0:00:22.740
over: "survey." Now this is a very simple
word and some of you might already be

0:00:22.740,0:00:29.369
using it, but I'd like to draw a little
extra attention to what not to use, okay?

0:00:29.369,0:00:34.829
So we'll cover this in detail today, but
first as always, let's do a quick review

0:00:34.829,0:00:41.940
of last week's class. Alright everyone, so
imagine I say, the clients really love

0:00:41.940,0:00:48.180
your proposal. So how does it feel?
And of course you feel really, really happy.

0:00:48.180,0:00:54.120
In fact, you are on cloud nine, okay?
There's a hint, if you don't know what cloud nine

0:00:54.120,0:00:57.930
is well you're in luck because it's in
one of our previous video so you can

0:00:57.930,0:01:02.280
take a look if you have the time.
But what is the expression that we learned

0:01:02.280,0:01:07.360
from last week? You have five seconds, okay?
You ready? Alright go.

0:01:10.740,0:01:17.220
And time is up if you said:
I am over the moon, that's exactly right.

0:01:17.220,0:01:22.560
Well done and thank you for remembering
last week's class. Alright so let's

0:01:22.560,0:01:28.020
move on to "survey." Now this is what I
sometimes hear... Alright so I'm talking

0:01:28.020,0:01:34.650
to my good friend and colleague, Taro,
and I asked him: So what do the customers

0:01:34.650,0:01:40.650
think about our new product? So we just
launched a new product, so do people love

0:01:40.650,0:01:48.160
it? Do they hate it? What are people saying?
Taro says: Well, I will send an anket.

0:01:48.420,0:01:54.360
OK now this is something that I
have heard used a lot here in Japan.

0:01:54.360,0:01:59.939
Now unfortunately, for us native English
speakers, we cannot understand what

0:01:59.939,0:02:05.520
"anket" means. In fact, I think this comes
from a French word, so maybe French

0:02:05.520,0:02:10.259
nationals might have an idea of what
this is, but for us native English

0:02:10.259,0:02:13.740
speakers - may be coming from
Canada, or the US,

0:02:13.740,0:02:18.270
or Australia, we will have some
difficulties understanding this.

0:02:18.270,0:02:25.740
So instead, you should say... that's right:
I will send a survey - okay? Or, okay here's

0:02:25.740,0:02:30.060
a bonus for you, you can also use
"questionnaire" alright?

0:02:30.060,0:02:33.930
survey or questionnaire,
not anket, okay?

0:02:33.930,0:02:38.430
Alright so pronunciation, it's very
simple so please repeat after me:

0:02:38.430,0:02:41.300
I'll send a survey.
Your turn.

0:02:43.040,0:02:44.360
Alright very good.

0:02:44.360,0:02:49.260
Now after my question: So what do the
customers think about our new product?

0:02:51.760,0:02:59.180
OK, good so you'll send a survey or a
questionnaire, okay - not anket. So please

0:02:59.190,0:03:03.330
remember that for next week.
OK everyone our bonus question is

0:03:03.330,0:03:07.920
another way to say: "norma." If you know
what this is, you can leave it in the

0:03:07.920,0:03:12.810
comments below. If you don't know what it is,
well you can find the answer in one

0:03:12.810,0:03:17.640
of our previous Bizmates for Beginners
video lessons, so take a look if you've

0:03:17.640,0:03:22.710
got the time. OK everyone, so that is it
for me this week. Thank you always for

0:03:22.710,0:03:28.420
watching the videos, have a great weekend
and I'll see you next time thank you.
