Point 50 ”Just in case.” 初級ビジネス英会話

初級者向けビジネス英会話 Bizmates for beginners 第50弾は、”Just in case.” です。

例えば、タロウと駅で会うという約束をしたとします。
“OK, I’ll meet you at the station.”「OK。駅で会いましょう。」
そこで「念のため、これ僕の電話番号。」と続ける場合あなたなら何と言いますか。

“Here is my number. Please call me if I don’t come.”
「これ僕の電話番号。もし僕が来なかったら電話して下さい。」
という表現でも間違いではありませんが、文章が長くなってしまいます。
またこの場合は、僕が来なかったらという理由に限定されます。

そこで”Here is my number. Just in case.”「これ僕の電話番号。念のため。」
と言ってみましょう。
この”Just in case”をつかうと、
「何かあった時のためにね。」というニュアンスになります。
自然で簡単に伝わる便利なフレーズですね。

最後に、発音は”Justin case.”と流れるように練習してみましょう。
ぜひこの表現を使ってみてください。

Hello and welcome to this Bizmates for beginners
video series for Japanese business people.

And today's phrase is
just in case.

Just in case.
What does this mean? We will find out.

But first, let's do our test.
OK, so you are at your desk.

And I walk to your desk and I say,
hey, where's your mouse pad?

And you say...

Good, I got rid of it.
That's right, did you get that?

I threw it away. I put it in the garbage.
Right, I got rid of it.

OK, I hope you got that.
Let's go on to today's phrase.

Just in case, very useful.
OK, what does this mean?

Well, let's imagine that Taro and I, we are going
to meet at the train station little bit later today.

OK, we will meet at the train station
and then go somewhere.

And I say, OK Taro, I'll meet you at the station.
OK, I'll be at the station.

And Taro says, Ah yeah.
Here's my number, my cellphone number.

Please call me if I don't come.
Or please call me if there is some trouble.

OK, it makes sense.
Yeah he is giving me his cellphone number.

But it's a long sentence you know.
Here's my number. Please call me if...

The train is late or if you have trouble,
or if you get lost, or...

You know there are many situations.
So it's a little bit long.

To make it shorter and more natural,
we can say this.

So I say, hey Taro,
OK, I'll meet you at the station, the train station.

And he says, here's my number,
just in case. Very natural.

So just in case means if there is some kind of problem,
here's my number, you can call me. Perfect.

OK, here's my number, just in case.
All right, let's look at pronunciation.

It's here's my number with a pause.
Here's my number, justin case, justin case.

Here's my number, justin case.
You try.

Good, OK let's try it with my sentence.
OK, I'll meet you at the station. OK?

OK, thank you.
Good, just like that.

All right. For homework,
next time I will say,

OK, I'll meet you at the station.
And you say, here's my number, just in case.

OK, please practice this and
we'll see you in the next lesson.

OK
Thank you.
