“Yes, I accidentally met him in the lobby.”「

“Yes, I ran into him in the lobby.”「

Hello, and welcome to this Bizmates for beginners
video series. And today's lesson is run into.

Run into. What does this mean? We will find
out. But first, let's do our test. OK, so

imagine you and I are at a party, a networking
party. And I say everyone is so quiet at this

networking party. Why? And you say, that's
right. In general, Japanese are shy. So when

you make a general statement, we can say in
general. OK, so let's go on to today's idiom.

Run into. Now, here's what I often hear. So
imagine Taro and I are colleagues, OK? And

I'm looking for Yoshi-san, another colleague.
And I say Taro, have you seen Yoshi-san? And

he says ah yes, I accidentally met him in
the lobby. You accidentally met him in the

lobby. OK, OK I see. So you didn't have a
meeting with him, but you met him. Right.

OK, I can understand the meaning, but it's
a little bit unnatural to say accidentally

meet someone. OK? So instead, we can say this.
So I say, have you seen Yoshi-san? Taro, have

you seen Yoshi-san. And he says, yes I ran
into him in the lobby. I see. I see. So, you

were in the lobby and you accidentally met
him. But we don't say accidentally met. OK?

Run into. Let's look at pronunciation. OK,
so it's yes with a pause. Yes, I ran into

him. I ran into him in the lobby. Yes, I ran
into him in the lobby. You try. Good one more

time. Yes, Iran into him in the lobby. Good.
OK. For homework, next time I see you, I will

ask have you seen Yoshi-san? And you say,
Yes, I ran into him in the lobby. OK, so please

practice that and we'll see you next time.
Thank you.
