Tip 147 ”bittersweet” 無料ビジネス英語学習

無料ビジネス英語学習 Words & Phrases 第147弾は、”bittersweet” です。

長く勤務した会社を退職した時、住む街を変えた時など、うれしくもあり悲しくもある何とも言えないほろ苦い気持ちになることってありますよね。
今回はそんな場面で使える表現を紹介します。

例えば、ヒカは最近仕事を辞めた友人のタロウに
“What was it like to quit your last campany?”「前職を辞めた時ってどんな感じだった?」と聞きました。
「何とも言えない複雑な気持ちだったよ。」と伝えたい場合、あなたがタロウなら英語で何と言いますか?

“Hmm, it had good points and bad points.”「う~ん、いいポイントも悪いポイントもあったよ。」
でも伝わりますが、より自然な言い回しがあります。

そこで
“Well, it was a bittersweet experience.”「う~ん、何とも言えない複雑な気持ちだったよ。」
と言ってみましょう。

Hello and welcome to this Bizmates
words and phrases

video series and today's word

is "bittersweet." Bitter...

sweet. So which is it? We will find out
but first let's do

our test. Okay, so you are my boss

I'm going to make a ridiculous request,
okay.

Can I be taken off this project? It's not
going very well.

You say? That's right!

That's out of the question. Okay?

that, of course, means NO. Alright,

just like that. That's out of the question.
Okay,

so let's go on to today's word -- bittersweet.

Alright, so here's what I sometimes
hear.

So let's imagine... let's imagine that
Taro,

my good friend, Taro -- he quit his last
company.

He worked at this company for many, many, many years

and he finally quit. And I Ask him:

"So what was it like to quit your last
company? You were there for such a long

"

"Hmmm...

"

Yeah, he had good points because you know he's

moving to a new company and he has a
fresh start.

That's good, right? But also bad points
because he had many close friends

at his other company. So we have some
good things

and some bad things in this
experience.

So how can we say that in a better
way?

Like this. Okay, so I say:

"Taro, so what was it like to quit your
last company?

"

Well, it was a bittersweet experience.

Very natural! Bitter...

sweet. Bitter, meaning it was kinda bad
there were bad things; he had to say

goodbye to

his friends at work, the bosses that he respected

but it was also very sweet -- good things
too;

because he's joining a new company, maybe a better salary, a better position.

Bittersweet experience. Okay,

so let's look at pronunciation

Well it was a it was a... wasa

bittersweet experience. Well

it wasa bit bittersweet experience. You
try.

Good. Okay with my question:

"Well what was it like to quit your last
company?"

Just like that. Okay, so for homework I'm
gonna ask you:

What was it like to quit your last company? And you just say...

That's right. "Well

was a bittersweet experience." Please
remember this

and we will see you next time. Thank you.
