Tip 49 ”stand out” 無料ビジネス英語学習

無料ビジネス英語学習 Words & Phrases 第49弾は、”stand out” です。

仕事ができる、と周りに感じてもらうためには、人より目立つ存在である必要がありますよね。

色々な場に参加し、自分の意見をしっかり述べて、
周りから注目されるようになれば、誰もが認めてくれるようになるわけです。

今回はそんな状態を伝える際に使えるフレーズです。

例えば、部下から

“What do I need to do to get promoted?” 「昇格するためには何が必要ですか?」
と聞かれた際に、「もっとミーティングで目立つ必要があるね。」と伝えたい場合、
あなたならどう言いますか?

日本人は「アピールする」という表現を日本語でよく使うため、

“You should appeal more in our meetings”
といった言い方が思いつくかもしれません。

しかし、英語では “appeal” = 「決まったことに反対する、抗議する」といった意味で
伝わってしまうため、使うべきではありません。

こんな時には、”stand out” = 「(周りから注目され)目立つ」をつかって

“You need to stand out a bit more in our meetins.”
というとすごくナチュラルに、意図を伝えることができます。

Hello and welcome to this Bizmates words and phrases
video series for Japanese businesspeople.

And today's idiom is stand out.

Stand out, what does it mean?
We will find out. OK.

So first let's do our test.
Tell me a decision you made that was a no brainer.

It was such an easy decision. Tell me.

OK, I hope you came up with a good example.
OK, so let's go on to today's idiom.

Stand out. It's not a bad word. You know, usually a word
out sounds like maybe it's a bad word. Not at all OK.

So this is what I often hear. You know, say Taro is my boss now.
Taro is my boss. I want to be promoted.

I want to become an assistant manager or a higher level.
And I say Taro, what do I need to get a, to get promoted?

What do I need to do to get promoted?
And Taro says,

You should appeal more in our meetings.
Appeal more? You know appeal, you got to be careful,

because I hear a lot of the Japanese use appeal, appeal,
and it doesn't... Appeal means to like go against someone's decision.

Someone makes a decision and you appeal the decision.
No, I disagree with that.

So, it has a little different meaning from how the Japanese use it.
OK, I think Taro wants to say,

No, no Hika, you need to participate more in the meetings.
Express your opinion, you know, so people notice you.

That has a different meaning, appeal more.
OK, so you should say this.

So, if I say Taro, what do I need to do to get promoted?
And he says,

Well Hika, you need to stand out a bit more in our meetings.
Oh, I need to stand out a bit more.

I will do that. I will participate more.
I will express my opinion more. I will prepare more,

and I'll be noticed. Stand out.
OK, so let's look at pronunciation.

You need to standoutabit, standoutabit moreinour meetings.
You need to standoutabit moreineour meetings.

So a pretty long one.
You need to standoutabit moreineour meetings.

You try.

One more time.
You need to standoutabit moreineour meetings.

OK, were you able to get that?
OK, so for homework,

tell me someone who stands out in your company.
OK, I'm sure there's always one person that has great leadership,

or great charisma and they stand out.
OK, who is that person?

You tell me in the next lesson.
OK, thank you.
